NDOT speaks on traffic calming opportunities

Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) Community Liaison Darren Pack visited our May community meeting to provide additional context on traffic calming and answer community questions.

Traffic calming eligibility is based upon a formula that most heavily factors volume of vehicles (less than 5,000 per day) and speed limit (30mph or less), but other notable factors are a street having walkability as it pertains to nearby destinations and less than 5 percent truck traffic (more than two axels). Contrary to recent reports, a street’s proximity to a emergency responders station are not a factor.

Many neighbors voiced concerns over Hadley Avenue. NDOT reports Hadley has 1,833 vehicles per day, and because it falls within the speed limit range, it should qualify for traffic calming. The next application window opens on September 3.

Additionally, Pack noted that some streets qualify for a newer program that can bypass voting, such as Hickory Industrial Drive.
